Fred immigrated in 1860 and became a naturalized United States citizen. In 1860 he lived as a boarder in Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota. In 1870 Fred and his wife Anna and their three children lived with his father in Red Wing. A domestic servant from Ireland lived with them. At the time of the 1880 census, Fred and his family lived in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota with his father who was 70 years old at that time. In 1885 Fred and his wife and children Joseph, Fred A., Clement, Mary, Lucy, Frank, William and his father lived in Red Wing, along with Fred’s first cousin August Gaertner. In 1895 Fred and his family lived in Red Wing. In 1900 Fred and his wife Anna M. and their children Lucy, Josephine, Margaret and Bernard, lived in Red Wing. In 1905 Friedrich and his wife and three of their children—William J., Margaret and Bernard L., lived in Goodhue County, Minnesota.
