In 1880 Mathias lived in Russia Township, Lorain County, Ohio with his parents and two of his siblings. In 1900 he and his wife lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio with four of their children. In 1910 he and his wife and six of their children lived in North Ridgeville. His name was transcribed as Janus on the 1910 census. In 1920 he and his wife lived in North Ridgeville with their son James and daughter Mary. Their son Matthias Jr. and his wife lived adjacent to their home. In 1930 he and his wife lived in North Ridgeville adjacent to the home of their daughter Gertrude, her husband Leo J. Wohleber and their 10 children. In 1940 he and his wife lived in North Ridgeville close to the home of their son Peter, their daughter Irene Hintz and her family.
