He immigrated in 1847 and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1860 he lived with his wife, two children, and a 68-year-old woman from Prussia named Anna M. Steffes in Marshfield, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, a few doors away from the family of his half-brother Jacob Steffes. In 1870 he lived with his wife and three children in Marshfield. In 1880 he lived in Marshfield with his wife and four of their children.
In 1900 he lived with his sons John and Peter and Peter’s wife Louisa in Union Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. A number of Gilles families lived on the same road. In 1910 he lived in Lafayette Township, Chippewa County, Wisconsin with his son Peter and Peter’s family.
