He immigrated to the United States in 1852 and became a naturalized citizen. In 1870 his last name on the census form was “Benus.”
In 1870 and 1880 he and his family lived in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. His wife’s father Peter Laux lived with them in 1880. In 1900 Peter and his wife lived with their daughter Veronica in Avon.
He ran a grocery and general merchandise store, first at Avon Center and then at the “Creek.”

Gertrude and her parents and three siblings sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on the bark “Infatigable,” arriving in New York, New York on July 11, 1843. She became a naturalized citizen.
As of 1900 she had had four children, of whom three were living.
In 1910 she was a widow; she lived with her daughter Veronica in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. They lived there in 1920 as well.
