He immigrated in 1847 and became a naturalized United States citizen.
In 1870 Joseph lived in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio with his wife and four children. His father and mother lived next door. The census spelled their family name Eislinger. The Covell Family Tree spells his name Eslinger.
In 1900 he and his wife and sons John and George lived in Avon with their daughter Anna Schafer and her three children Mary, Laurence and Veronica.
