In 1892 James lived in Corning, Steuben County, New York. The New York census reported that he was born in the United States. James was listed as a telegrapher in the 1893, 1899, and 1903 city directories for Corning. In 1900 James lived in Corning with his wife Catherine. The 1900 federal census reported that he had been born in Canada in December of 1871; that his father was from England and his mother was from Canada; and that he had immigrated to the United States in 1889 and was a naturalized United States citizen. In 1906 he and his wife Catherine lived in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.
In 1908 he was stationed to work in Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin. In 1911 he was listed in the La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin city directory. In 1913 he and his wife lived in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. In 1918 he and his wife lived in Chilton, Calumet County, Wisconsin. He reported that he was a Canadian citizen, a nondeclarant alien, on the World War I draft registration papers and that his birthdate was December 18, 1872. In 1919 and 1920 he and his wife lived in La Crosse. The 1920 federal census reported that he and his wife and son Gale were lodgers. James was reported to be John Tipton who was born in Iowa in about 1873. His wife was reported to be Mary Tipton who was born in Wisconsin, with a father from Wisconsin and a mother from Iowa. Gale was reported to have been born in Wisconsin. James’ children Helen and Thomas were not enumerated with their parents.
In 1924 and 1927 he and his wife Minnie lived in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. In 1930 he and his wife Minnie and their three children lived in Milwaukee. Their family name was recorded in the census as Dipton. The census reported that he had been born in New York State and was 58 years old, implying a birth year of about 1878.
In 1935, 1940 and 1942 he and his wife lived in Milwaukee. In 1942 he reported that his birthdate was December 18, 1877.

In 1906 Catherine and her husband lived in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Catherine filed for divorce on August 7, 1907 and the divorce was granted on November 13, 1907. She filed on the basis of nonsupport.
