He immigrated to the United States in 1847 or 1848 and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1893 the U.S. City Directory for La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin lists two John Zimmers. One worked at N.B. Holway, and one was a laborer. The 1895 Wisconsin census recorded that there were four males and four females living in John Zimmer’s household.
In 1900 John and his wife and seven children lived in La Crosse. In 1910 John and his wife and six of their chldren lived in La Crosse. Their daughters Emma and Minnie were not enumerated with the family in 1910.

The 1900 federal census gives October 1858 as her birth month. As of 1900 she had had seven children, all of whom were living. As of 1910 she had had eight children, all of whom were living. In 1920 Minnie lived in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin with four of her sons—George, Albert, Richard and Vilas. In 1930 she lived in La Crosse with her sons George and Richard.
