Both of his parents were from Germany.
In 1900 he and his brother Henry were boarders in Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1910 and 1920 he and his wife lived in Lorain. In 1930 they lived in Litchfield Township, Medina County, Ohio. In 1910 both their son and daughter were enumerated with them; in 1920 only their daughter was included.
