He immigated with his parents in about 1841. They settled on a farm near Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1880 and 1900 he and his family lived in Carlisle Township, Lorain County. In 1910 he lived in Carlisle with his daughters Mary and Celia. His son John W. Knechtges and his family lived adjacent to Michael’s home. In 1920 he lived with his daughters Mary and Celia in Elyria, Lorain County.
He was superintendent of the Black River Stone Company quarry in Avon.
