Notes for Nikolaus Diedrick
Source: Records of St. Remigius Church in Retterath; and Ancestry.com—New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957.
His baptismal sponsors were Nikolaus Lanser and Maria Katharine Simon, both single persons from Retterath.
He and his family arrived August 15, 1855 in New York from London on the ship “Devonshire.” Nicholas traveled with the families of his brothers Johann and Michael Diederich and that of Jacob Weiler. Jacob Weiler had married Nicholas' daughter Katherine in 1851.
Nicholas' family originally settled in LaGrange, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1860 they lived there with relatives. In 1870 they lived there with their sons John and Matthias and their families, as well as their son Jacob, and their grandson John Weiler. There were very few other people from Germany living in LaGrange in 1870.
In 1880 Nikolaus and his wife lived in Carlisle, Lorain County, along with the family of their son John M. Diedrick. Nikolaus and Gertrude moved to Elyria, Lorain County, shortly before they died.

Gertrud’s brother Matthias married her husband Nikolaus' sister Margarete.
She and her husband Nikolaus Diederich immigrated to Ohio in 1855 with their children. They traveled with Michael Diederich and his family, and with Jacob Weiler, their son-in-law.
