Both of his parents were from Germany. In 1880 he lived alone in Union Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin. A number of Gilles families lived nearby—those of Paul, George and Matthias Gilles. Their names were spelled Giles on the census. In 1900 he lived with his wife and nine children in Union Township. Two other Gilles families lived nearby—Elizabeth and George Gilles and their family and Paul Gilles and his family.
