In 1850 he lived with his wife Teresa and their children in Avon Township, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1860 he lived with his father and the family of his brother Clemens Alten in Avon, including his sister-in-law’s parents Mary and Peter Pitts and her sister Mary. In 1870 he and his family lived in Avon next door to the family of Clemens Alten. Peter Pike, a 70-year-old man from Prussia, lived with them. In 1880 he lived in Avon with four daughters and four sons from his second marriage. John Weber, a 21-year-old from Ohio, lived with them and worked as a farm laborer.
