He may have been the son of Anton Gilles and Anna Maria Lauxen of Greimersburg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany who was born in April of 1816. That Nikolaus GIlles was the sixth cousin once removed of Leo Felix Diederich.
In the 1860 census his name was spelled Gillion.
In 1860 he and his wife and two children--Mary and Nicholas--lived in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1870 he and his wife and son Nicholas lived in Avon. In 1880 he and his wife lived in Avon, next door to the family of their daughter Mary and her husband John Diederich.
His son Nikolaus was not mentioned in his will. The will was probated on July 22, 1893.
