He immigrated in 1858 and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1880 he and his wife and four children lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1900 he and his wife lived in North Ridgeville with their daughter Mary and her family. A boarder named Casper Berres (born January 1875 in Ohio, a farm laborer in 1900) lived with them.
The inscription on his tombstone is Berres rather than Barres.

The 1860 census listed Amy as her first name. In 1900 the census reported that she had had seven children of whom four were living. In 1910 the census reported that she had had five children of whom four were living.
In 1910 she lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio with her daughter Mary, Mary’s husband Charles H. Suiter and their six children.
