He immigrated in 1872 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
In 1900 he and his wife lived with their two sons and three daughters, as well as his wife’s parents, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In 1920 he and his wife lived in Cleveland with their daughters Camilla Hlavka and Otilia (Tillie) Harris. Their late daughter Anna’s two children, Gerald H. and Dorothy M. Rothgery, lived with them.
In 1930 John, a widower, lived with his daughter Camilla, Camilla’s husband John Chvatal, Camilla’s sister Otilla, and John Hlavka’s grandchildren Gerald and Dorothy Rothgery.
