Her parents were born in Germany. They immigrated with her from Canada in about 1846 and she was naturalized in 1868. She had 10 children, of whom nine were living in 1900.
In 1920 she lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio with her son Lawrence, her daughter Elizabeth Gilbert and Elizabeth’s four children.

Although the 1860 census reported that he was born in Ohio, the 1900 census reported that he immigrated to the United States in 1842. He was a naturalized citizen.
In 1880 he and his wife and six children lived in Dover (now Westlake), Cuyahoga County, Ohio, with John’s father Peter Rutgeri. In 1900 John and his wife and sons John and Lawrence lived in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1910 John and Mary lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County.
