He sailed from LeHavre France on the ship “Germanic,” arriving in New York, New York on May 13 1885.
On his passport application for a trip to Germany and Switzerland in May of 1924 Mathias reported:
He was born in Fautenbach, Germany on February 9, 1865 and his father was Engelbert Riegelsberger.
He had sailed to the United States from Le Havre, France about May 1885 and had resided in Buffalo, New York; New York City; and Avon, Ohio.
On October 19, 1892 he became a naturalized citizen while living in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. His current residence was Avon, Ohio.
In 1900 Matthias and his wife lived in The Bronx, New York, New York with four children. In 1910 he and his seven children lived in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. The 1910 census reported that his oldest son Joseph was born in Ohio.
In 1920 he lived in Avon with his sons Francis and Edward. In 1930 he lived in Buffalo, Erie County, New York with his wife Caroline.
