According to Barbara Riegelsberger, Joseph immigrated to Ohio and settled near his uncle Paul Pauly in Dover (now Westlake), Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
He lived in Dover as early as 1867. In the time period 1879-1880 he was listed as working as a blacksmith in Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Their daughter Elizabeth’s census data from 1930 stated that both of her parents were born in Germany. According to Barbara Riegelsberger, Joseph and Gertrud had seven daughters, one of whom died in infancy.
