According to Beate Hammes, Barbara and her family were recorded in the 1880 US Census in Amherst, Lorain County, Ohio. Manfred Ruettgers provided the information linking Barbara to her birth family.
Barbara immigrated in 1873.
In 1900 Barbara lived in Amherst, a widow with seven children at home. She had given birth to 12 children, nine of whom were living. In 1910 Barbara and three of her children—Anna M., Anthony A, and Catharine M.—lived in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio.

In 1870 Harmon lived with his parents and three siblings in Amherst, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1880 Herman and his young family lived in Amherst. By 1900 his wife was listed as a widow in the census.
In June 1880 he owned 131 acres of land, of which 18 were tilled. The farm was valued at $1,800 and he owned three horses. His brother John Henry was also included in the Census Non-Population Schedule in 1880.
